DON’T MOURN THE LOSS OF HAIR, STOP IT!

Men and women experience hair loss at various points in their lives – whether it’s male patterned baldness, or women’s hormonal shifts as they age. The results are devastating and most are desperate to make hair loss stop!

With a slew of products on the market that promise change, the reality is, preventing hair loss is simpler than treating the situation. Simply put, sensible hair care can help you keep the tresses you already have. Here are some quick tips to help “lock in” your locks before they’re gone. While not rocket-science, they’re simple reminders for keeping your hair healthy and strong.

• Keep it Clean

Did you know that dirty hair is more likely to fall out? It’s true, so keep it clean using high quality shampoos and conditioners packed with natural ingredients such as coconut, corn, and oat-derived cleansers that are gentle and non-stripping, and vegetable-derived humectants that impart the optimal level of shine without weighing hair down. Products that contain keratin and amber extract strengthen damaged hair and act as an anti-oxidant. Avoid products formulated with parabens or sodium chloride. We love the Oribe and Kerasilk by GOLDWELL lines of shampoos and conditioners, carefully crafted for various types of hair.

When shampooing, concentrate your efforts on the scalp and roots of the hair, massaging gently. When applying conditioners, focus on the ends first as they’re the driest and are more vulnerable to the damage that comes from exposure.

• CUT!

It's a true fact that regular trims provide a neater appearance and a healthier overall look and feel to the hair. Cut split ends off at the knees to prevent splitting and weakening of the strands.

• Avoid Bad (Hair) Behavior

While everyone knows bad hair habits, it’s worth reiterating as it’s easy to get lazy and the goal is to prevent hair breakage and loss before it starts:

·      Stay away from pulling hair back tightly into braids, pony tails, and buns. This can actually pull hair out from the roots! You can stop hair loss by not wearing these styles, or create looser version of these styles. Hair can actually stop growing in areas where it’s constantly being pulled from.

·      Avoid too many chemical treatments that can damage the hair: flat ironing, straightening, hot oil treatments, etc. Spread them out as much as possible to give your hair a rest.

·      Blow drying hair on a daily basis: undoubtedly, this dries out the scalp and damages hair follicles. With summer heat, keep this in mind as the sun adds insult to injury by drying out your hair even more. Best practice? Allow hair to air dry whenever possible or if you must, lower the heat setting on your hair dryer.

·      Wet hair beware: treat hair gently when towel drying and combing through wet locks—it can pull hair out by the roots or break and stretch hair strands.

• Eating Healthy=Healthy Hair

Beauty from the inside out. Eating healthy foods – consuming a balanced diet rich in protein, fruits, vegetables and consuming plenty of water – all contribute to beautiful, healthy hair. Dull hair that’s falling out can sometimes indicate a health issue that may require a visit to your physician.

At Jesamondo Salon & Spa, we’re passionate about hair, beauty and wellness. Our stylists are trained to help you achieve the gorgeous locks you love, and can advise you on how to keep them. Recently Medi Tresse Medical Hair Rejuvenation for Women interviewed a Jesamondo expert stylist regarding hair loss in women and came up with the following questions and answers. We hope this will help answer some of your questions. Read on…

Interview by Medi Tresse on June 9, 2016:

One area of questions that we often get is related to how patients should style their hair.  Many times patients are not only concerned with styles that go well with thinner hair, but more importantly what should be avoided to ensure they are not causing any damage to their hair.  To help answer some of the most common questions we get, we spoke to the expert team at Jesamondo Salon & Spa in Natick, an award-winning hair salon that has been in business for over 35 years.
Q: If a woman is concerned with thinning hair are there certain hair styles that you would recommend or ones they should avoid?
A: We tend to recommend more one length cuts, or fewer layers. Too many layers can make hair look flat. You also don’t want to have your hair too long. The weight of the length can give your hair a thinner appearance.
Q: In between hair styling appointments is there anything a woman should do at home to help improve the look of her thinning hair?
A: Thin hair still requires treatments in order to look shiny and healthy. You just need to rinse the product out well so that it doesn’t weigh the hair down. Apply any treatments or conditioners to the ends more than the scalp area to avoid any excess weight.  It’s always a good idea to massage your scalp whenever possible to help stimulate your hair follicles.
Q: There have been stories about over using products, colors, or styling techniques that have led to hair loss, what types of questions should a woman ask her stylist before proceeding with any product or treatment?
A: You want to use “ammonia free” color if possible, as it is gentler on your hair and scalp. Not going too light will also help aide in the appearance of thinning hair. Try not to apply too much heat when styling, as this can cause the hair to become weak and break off.
Q: What questions should a woman ask her stylist to ensure they are experienced at styling thinning hair?
A: All you can do is ask. Even some of the more experienced stylists may not know how to handle thinning hair. It’s always good to have a consult before seeing a new stylist or trying a new style.
Q: Hair breakage is another problem women with already thinning hair face. What would you recommend as far as product use or avoidance to help combat breakage?
A: Try to use a nurturing and strengthening shampoo and conditioner, as well as lighter styling products (some gels and other products can be sticky and cause the hair to break when brushing through). Gently comb when hair is wet, detangle from the ends of the hair and work upward in sections to avoid ripping through the tangles. Finger dry partially before beginning to use a brush to style. Use heat appliances (blow dryer, curling iron) only as needed and be sure to use the lowest temperature possible to get the job done.
These are just a handful of tips from the team at Jesamondo to take into consideration.  The team of stylists at Jesamondo have a ton more ways of finding the right cut and/or color to improve the look and feel of your thinning hair.  Regular professional salon visits are recommended, especially while you are in the process of using MediTresse’s treatments such as PRP and/or laser therapy at home.
